This week Sony finally delivered the long-awaited PC VR adapter for the PSVR2, but according to preliminary reports, some users can play PC VR titles like Half-Life: Alyx without even the $60 adapter
According to several sources, PSVR2 owners can connect their graphics card with USB-C ports directly to the headset and play SteamVR games. You don't need an adapter; just download the PlayStation VR 2 app from Steam.
However, it is not just an ordinary USB-C port: VirtualLink is a bit of an outlier that has been phased out in more recent GPUs.
With support from AMD and Nvidia, VirtualLink was first introduced in 2018 with the goal of streamlining PC VR connections by combining data transfer and power in a single cable.
At the time, it was touted as a vast improvement over the hassle of breakout boxes and numerous connectors (USB, video and the occasional extra power supply). Unfortunately, it was abandoned in later GPUs as the industry focused less on PC VR and more on standalone VR headsets like Meta Quest.
The user experiences you see on Steam that say they don't need the PC VR adapter probably come from GPUs released around 2018, such as the AMD 6000 or 7000 series reference design cards and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 20 Series cards (Founders Editions), because partner cards did not come with VirtualLink.
The easiest way to find out if you are among the lucky ones is to download the PSVR2 program from Steam. The list below are graphics cards that are likely to work without an adapter. But there are probably other GPUs that can do this as well.
